Post subject:  What about UEFI on navigatrix 0.5 finally?

Hi,

I'm updating a Spanish documentation. I don't have a UEFI computer and I can't try to install or run Navigatrix 0.5.

Here says "The new version runs on a linux kernel that is able to run under EFI/GPT and is certified by Microsoft in order to be able to run under its Secure Boot scheme".
Is this tested? Does this mean it will work without problem in windows 8 preinstalled computers in dual boot?

Navigatrix is 32 bits system and I think only 64 bits ubuntu systems can run under UEFI+secure boot.

I'm in the same boat as you in that I do not have access to W8/UEFI hardware and therefore can' t test this. What I know is:

(1) The Windows specification for Secure Boot requires hardware manufactures to allow Secure Boot to be disabled on non-ARM hardware. This would leave you with an UEFI motherboard and an GPT hard disk.

(2) I have successfully installed nx on an Asus notebook with Intel 64-bit architecture and an UEFI motherboard but with a non-GPT hard drive (motherboard in legacy mode, no secure boot). I don't see why this wouldn't work with a GPT drive (with Secure Bot disabled if nesessary) but I have not tested it.

I don't know if the 64-it requirement you mention is tied to Secure Boot (which we should be allowed to disable on non-ARM hardware) or to UEFI itself. I'm eager to find someoe with W8 equipped hardware who would be willing to try installing NX. Perhaps we're lucky and someone else wo reads this forum has already done so?

This https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-cdimage/+bug/1025555 makes it sound as if you not only need to disable secure boot but also install in legacy mode on 64-bit hardware...

Thanks for your clarifications Markus.

We need Navigatrix is 32 bits to run on older and new machines, so according to the information we have....

- Running Navigatrix on 32 and 64 bits non-UEFI machines:
Single boot: OK.
Dual boot: Ok.

- Running Navigatrix on 32 bits UEFI-legacy capable machines:
Single boot: set UEFI-legacy mode and secure boot off.
Dual boot: Only possible If the other systems of your computer are installed in secure boot off (because ubuntu 32 bits in not secure boot on capable) and are installed in UEFI-legacy mode. If the other systems of your computer are installed in UEFI mode then convert your installed Ubuntu in UEFI mode (not easy for linux beginners).

- Running Navigatrix on 32 bits UEFI-only firmware (not UEFI-legacy) capable machines (there are few cases):
Single boot: Not possible.
Dual boot: Not possible.

- Running Navigatrix on 64 bits UEFI-legacy capable machines:
Single boot: set UEFI-legacy mode and secure boot off.
Dual boot: only possible if the other systems of your computer are installed in secure boot off and UEFI-legacy (highly unlikely)

- Running Navigatrix on 64 bits UEFI-only firmware (not UEFI-legacy) capable machines (does this exist? is it the future?):
Single boot: Not possible.
Dual boot: Not possible.

So... in order to simplify the message to the user, in my opinion we should say "Navigatrix runs ok on old computers in single and dual boot but only run in single mode on new computers setting UEFI-legacy and secure boot off."

Am I right?

editing: would be this rule true in all cases? running Navigatrix from DVD, USB, HDD.

Hello sailoog,

Sounds right and clear to me - "to the best of our knowledge"...until we get more knwoledge by actually trying on a W8 box ;-) I will include a link to your post in the nx documentation.

Thanks for clarifying this,
Markus
