I've installed Navigatrix on ASUS Eee PC 1201HA 1.33Hz it is ok exclude screen drivers, it appears incorrect. System notifies that some proprietary drivers required. But when try to download it via standard tool Hardware Drivers, process terminates with notice that download was fault.
Please advice way to fix this issue.
Thanks in advance!

I gave a quick look and this is what I've found so far:

Quote:
I think your 1201HA might have the GMA 500 is that correct? This franken-beast has known driver issues with about every OS including Linux.

This thread in the multimedia forum might help, lot of work from folks trying to get the best performance: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1229345

It 1:15AM here...I'll give a more thorough look into your problem in the morning...well later in the morning, as some of the advice provided in the link above won't fit your situation.

Hang on a tick. I think you'll run into some problems as the advice calls for editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf ...which we don't have. The style has changed a bit.

....let me finish my coffee and clear the fog in my head.

Ok, let's go back to the beginning.

When you ran it from the USB...was everything OK?

...and only after a hard drive install things went wrong?

Is this correct?

If it is, what is it that is wrong? Resolution? Aspect...not being proportional...stretched?

It won't be the first time I've offered advice without fully understanding what's going on, but the 1201HA gets linked to these poulsbo files frequently.

Open a terminal and enter:
Code:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gma500/ppa

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install poulsbo-driver-2d poulsbo-driver-3d poulsbo-config

sudo reboot
...and that should do it--whatever 'it' might be.

Someone stated that you don't need 'acpi_backlight=vendor', as claimed in other parts of the internet...that it makes the keyboard brightness control less functional...I don't know. I don't even know what the problem is.

Just as a means of explanation to what is going on with those commands...

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gma500/ppa

This means: acting as 'root', the supreme commander, add to the list of repositories the following ppa (personal package archive) named 'gma500'.

Personal package archive is a software package (or packages) for hardware or software that warrants...in someone's opinion...an additional package made available for unique hardware or significant software modifications.

If you don't have a gma500 video chip there is no reason (other than fruitless curiosity) to do this.

sudo apt-get update

Updates your list of available packages.

sudo apt-get install poulsbo-driver-2d poulsbo-driver-3d poulsbo-config

Installs the 3 named packages...in this case they are packages from the previously added (and updated) ppa index.

sudo reboot

...and reboots.

Yes, but according provided via link it is created. In my case the system got off after manipulations advised via link provided.

Moe, it does not fix this problem. When i perform above system does not start back correctly, only black screen with command line which requires admin login and password, when insert it says Welcome but no any other interface is initiated.
I made
Code:
lspci -knn

and i have following software on this laptop:
Code:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation System Controller Hub (SCH Poulsbo) Graphics Controller [8086:8108] (rev 07)
   Kernel driver in use: poulsbo
   Kernel modules: psb_gfx, poulsbo

I do not understand either it is GMA 500 or not.

My problem is in proportion, screen is stretched in horizontal and graphics are very slow.

When try to initiate Preferences-Hardware drivers, there is error:
Code:
Downloading package indexes failed, please check your network status. Most drivers will not be available.

Think it is valuable. When perform
Code:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gma500/ppa

there is as follows:
Code:
alexey@alexey-laptop:~$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gma500/ppa
Executing: gpg --ignore-time-conflict --no-options --no-default-keyring --secret-keyring /etc/apt/secring.gpg --trustdb-name /etc/apt/trustdb.gpg --keyring /etc/apt/trusted.gpg --primary-keyring /etc/apt/trusted.gpg --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv 0603B16772FA287804FD5DDD5A5366B134BA7AE9

So, system gets broken only after
Code:
sudo apt-get install poulsbo-driver-2d poulsbo-driver-3d poulsbo-config

When try to install poulsbo via Synaptic and has following errors:
Code:
E: psb-kernel-source: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 10
E: xserver-xorg-video-psb: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
E: poulsbo-driver-2d: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured

I think I've located the general area of the problem. It might take me a day, or two, to figure out the specifics, and if it can be fixed.

The psb-kernel-source want to make the psb-modules. But it's hanging up on the kernel headers and dies. It can't make the module...so the rest of the process can do its stuff.

Like with most things; once you understand how it doesn't work you can begin to understand how it should work.

This is an example of the problems one encounters....
Code:
make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-headers-3.0.9-dsp'
/usr/src/psb-kernel-source-4.42.0/Makefile:257: *** Only 2.6.x and later kernels are supported (3.0.9).  Stop.

...apparently for the programmers of this module, kernel 3.0.9 (the one in Navigatrix) is not later than 2.6.x.

Now, it's time to hit the rum.

I've never been a fan of drm. I don't understand it. I can barely spell it.

But this is the wall I'm running into. Specifically:
Quote:
* \file drm_auth.c
* IOCTLs for authentication
I've modified some things and moved further down the road to compiling a psb module...but now I'm bumping into this drm auth problem. I don't have the "magic number" in more ways then one.

I don't know if this is hard coded into the device and their way of thinking is that if you don't have the device you don't need the module...or what?

This is what I've done.

Code:
sudo -s
Become super straight away
Code:
cd /usr/scr/linux-headers-3.0.9-dsp/arch/x86
Code:
cp Makefile Makefile_32
(It's a 32/64 bit Makefile but the psb module is looking for a 32 bit Makefile...so I gave it one.)

I went downtown and picked through the waste bin for the file attached at the bottom of this post and copied it from the Downloads directory to the current directory.
Code:
cp ~/USER$/Download/Makefile_32.cpu.txt Makefile_32.cpu
Repaired a symbolic link...
Code:
cd /usr/src/linux-headers-3.0.9-dsp/includes
Code:
rm asm
Code:
ln -s asm-x86 asm

Edited the module code so it doesn't choke on the kernel
Code:
gedit /usr/src/psb-kernel-source-4.42.0/Makefile
went down to lines 256-259 and comment out with a #
Code:
#ifeq ($(BELOW26),y)
#$(error Only 2.6.x and later kernels are supported \
#   ($(VERSION).$(PATCHLEVEL).$(SUBLEVEL)))
#endif
Save and exit gedit
Code:
cd  /usr/src/psb-kernel-source-4.42.0/
Code:
make

Since you have the hardware; try it...and see if it makes it through.

If it does....
Code:
make install
or
Code:
apt-get -f install

If not, it's back to the drawing board.

Humour me....suppose nothing has worked. So far it's just been a long educational slog.

It looks like possibly the module you seek is already there. Yeah...surprised me too.
Code:
sudo updatedb
to update the database of all the files on your machine.
Code:
locate psb_gfx
to see if you have a file named and located at

/lib/modules/3.0.9-dsp/kernel/drivers/staging/gma500/psb_gfx.ko

It should be...no, really...it should.

If you don't; download the file attached to the bottom of this post and put it there.

Code:
sudo mkdir -p /lib/modules/3.0.9-dsp/kernel/drivers/staging/gma500/
Code:
sudo cp ~/Downloads/psb_gfx.ko.txt /lib/modules/3.0.9-dsp/kernel/drivers/staging/gma500/psb_gfx.ko
When it's in place (and we know it is)
Code:
sudo modprobe psb_gfx
What happens?

so, i found this file on my own machine, not on that which is in problem. Will look tomorrow in that one.
