I am new to Linux, so go easy.

Want to try some fixes that are in the Beta version 3.3.1419.

The beta is not in the repository so you need to find it.

https://launchpad.net/~nohal/+archive/opencpn/+build/5618030/+files/opencpn_3.3.1419-0%7Eprecise1_i386.deb

Download it.

When it's finished, click on the green down arrow on the upper right toolbar of your browser.

Click the file you've just downloaded.

Go past the 'warning' An older version is available in a software channel

Click 'install'

Enter password if required.

Close notification that installation is complete.

Close installer.

Have fun, tell no one about the process to preserve the mystique.

A suggestion (because I learned this the hard way...): If you can spare about 10GB of your hard disk it may be a good idea to create another (~10GB) partition on your disk and install another copy of Navigatrix in there. You can use this partition as a "laboratory environment" to try out beta versions without any risk to the integrity of your main installation. If something goes wrong you just re-install a blank NX into this play area.

The additional NX partition will just become another option in the boot manager's selection menu. It'll probably have the same name as your existing "main" NX but you can figure from the their position in the menu which is which. The installation instructions in the Navigatrix documentation (step 3 onwards) might be enough to get you started if you choose to go down this path.

Tried to do this again with the latest version of Navigatrix and a newer Beta of OpenCpn but I can't get the spell quite right.

Tried downloading the .deb package for the latest UBUNTU, did not work.

Tried to figure out package installer, seems like I need to "Force" the version, but that option is greyed.

Can you explain the naming convention of the packages ?

What do I need to do.

Thanks,
JM.

Download the package straight from the horse's mouth

sudo dpkg -i ~/Downloads/name of the .deb file

might be the first thing to try

The following posted on OpenCPN forum:
"
The beta PPA is now populated with fresh 3.3.1824 builds for all the supported Ubuntu versions. Please note that there will be no manually built DEB packages on opencpn.org for some time as Cagney is out sailing, so really consider adding the PPA to your system, it is as easy as
Code:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nohal/opencpn
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install opencpn
"
http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/f134/opencpn-beta-version-3-3-1824-released-128480.html

Those commands got me the latest Beta version.
