You are fortunate. I'm a native english speaker and using english gets me into so much trouble.
There's a trick to changing prefered language. I'll walk through the whole process.

Left Click on the prefered language and drag it up to the top of the list.

You are creating a new order of preference. The language at the top of the list will be used first. If there are gap s or missing translations the computer will select vocabulary from the next language of preference in the list. If there is no translation available from that language group the computer moves to the next language on the list, and so on,...until...ultimately it reaches the default language...english. Everything below
english is
ignored.

Additionally changing language on a 4GB USB stick
doesn't leave room to swing a cat much less do anything else; this is best left to larger sticks or hard drive installations. Some applications, the Planetarium (Stellarium), for example, need to be individually configured.
