Hey ho - lots of problems here....Lost most of my keyboard so now using the virtual one...un peu slow but I view it as penance for being such a clot

However - I have lost Navigatrix as well. Athough I can open a terminal - I cant type anything into it [keyboard or virtual k'board].

Oddly enough I can run Open cpn but have lost gps [proto Major and his younger brother]

Just to add insult to injury - The windows partition runs Open cpn fine, and with the gps...

Time for a shiny new brick or is this rescuable?? [I can get a new keyboard for about 20 bucks - which I woud have to do anyway]

You may disconnect the keyboard from the laptop and dry it in the sun for a while....

Because of the problems encountered, I made a new stick "persistent-ised" it, ran the checksum and all appears ok but maybe I've got other problems with that little Samsung.....

So - just for the heck of it, I tried the stick in my Gateway 64 bit computer - and it works!!

However - back to Garmin 18x gps hockey pucks - I'm getting proto major and minor again and can't seem to get the thing to read.

I ran the tail firstly with the gps plugged in, then out, then in again - pasted below.

What am I missing - or more likely, doing wrong?

Tony, it looks like your file system is buggered up a bit.As I recall you are using NX as a LiveCD, so you could re-make your persistence file via the boot menu, down the More Options path, and while you're in there run the checksum verification.

Thanks, Moe - good to hear from you again! I'll try that and get back to you although on the new nx intro page it gives you the option of runnning the checksum, which I did, and it said it was ok............hey ho - I'll do it again!

Your logfile was showing errors in an ext-4 filesystem. On a LiveCD that filesystem is in the persistence file.

The persistence file is created from the squashfilesystem that is the magic of a LiveCD. The squashfilesystem is what is verified with the checksum. Your squashfile checks out, so the error indicate the ext-4 was corrupted after its creation.

This might not be the source of the full problem of coffee on the keyboard, but we'll just rule it out.

Yeah, Tony. I think I might not have made myself clear.

The persistence file is created when you make the USB stick. It can be created, deleted, and recreated without downloading anything.

It takes about 6 minutes to delete and recreate it through the bootup menu under "Options". So you can really screw up the system and restore the 'fresh-out-of-the-box' smell without the hassle.

But yeah, downloading is slow. The files are on shoestring budget shared servers. They are of the type that are advertised as "UNLIMITED" everything, except if you go over certain arbitrary limits in the small print. Navigatrix has been exceeding those limits even with the lateral spread to other 'budget' servers.

My understanding is it would take almost four times the donations to underwrite the expenses to the next tier with suitable bandwidth.

Oh - ok...so I didn't need to re do the stick? Oh well!!

Anyway - I did and here is the result on initial start up then with gps plugged in.

I think its the same problem: if so, which boot option should I choose.

Interestingly enough, this new stick is working (well, not quite), on my Gateway 64 bit machine.

OK: Here is the "new stick" - its an 8 gig stick. I went through the options page and did the make the 4 gig bit persistent (does this matter - I mean, does it magically find the 4 gig bit on the stick which needs persistance-ising?)

Your Garmin GPS (Device ID 091e:0003) has some niggles to get around. It needs extra configuration as described here. A good GPS without those niggles is the Globalsat BU-353 which works out of the box and additionally has an outstanding sensitivity when it comes to gps satellite reception.
